The oldest son of an adventurous family relates their true life experiences of pioneering on an Alaskan island after World War ii. His first book, The Cheechakoes, told of coming to the southern tip of Admiralty Island, an abandoned whaling plant at Murder Cove, just after the end of World War II. With him were his parents and two brothers. They lived a typical Alaska life style; fishing, hunting, trapping, gardening, berry-picking, and found it satisfying.

“The Cheechakoes” by Wayne Short. Just after a young Navy veteran returns home from the south Pacific, Wayne Short moves with his family to an island in Southeast Alaska. The story, titled after the word for newcomers to Alaska, is a story of family, adventure and the pioneer spirit that brought so many people to Alaska. "The Cheechakoes, written in a simple, unpretentious style, gets more of the real pulse of Alaska into a single chapter than Edna Ferber did in all the pages of her massive Ice Palace-an Alaskan novel written by a New Yorker for Hollywood. If that lover of the true north named Jack London were still around, he'd no doubt have Mr.

Short's book /5(21). The Cheechakoes book. Read 3 reviews from the world's largest community for readers.4/5. The Cheechakoes and Wayne's second book, This Raw Land, are two of the best I have read. They truly give one a feeling of what it must have been like in those early years. Having grown up in rural East Texas during the same time period as the books, I found that the part I enjoyed most was comparing the experiences of Wayne and his family with 5/5(5).
